The best place to see the famous panorama and take good pictures is from above the church, when you descend from the fortress towards the lake. And once you are tired you can sit down in one of a few cafes and watch the busy world around you. The Old Town in Ohrid is such a pleasant place, perfect for a slow wander around. I absolutely loved this country when I visited, and I’m sure you’ll love it, too. It’s also the best place to explore the stunning Lake Ohrid. It’s one of the oldest places in the country, famous for the Ohrid Pearls that you can buy in the local stores. You can taste delicious food and local wine, join a wine-tasting tour, enjoy hiking and stunning lakes, and relax on the beach.

The canyon’s proximity to Skopje makes it ideal for day trips, though overnight stays in nearby villages provide deeper immersion in nature. Across the Vardar river, you can explore the oldest part of Skopje – the bazaar with the maze of narrow streets and the fortress towering above the area. The central part of the city is lined with modern buildings that try to resemble ancient ones and with countless statues (some of them portray well-known historical figures, others are just random scenes). Where to stay
Take the road From Kumanovo, and follow the winding trail till you reach the destination. This natural observatory is located at a one hour drive away from Skopje. The terrace on the front is the perfect spot for you to unwind. Crystal green, calm, and stretching for miles on end, the river-lake is a perfect spot for kayaking and boat rides. If you want to take the easy way up, just follow the asphalt road and you’ll get to a location called Middle Vodno, where this secluded church awaits. North Macedonia has an abundance of religious monuments and artifacts, so you’ll find a captivating church almost anywhere you turn.
Stroll around Ohrid town’s sublime churches and swim in the spectacular lake
Once you’ve arrived, follow the short, well-marked trail up the rocky hill to explore ancient stone markers. The springs nearby are also worth a visit, and you can rent a rowboat for an even closer look. Founded in AD 905 by its namesake saint, the monastery is famous for its stunning Byzantine architecture, vibrant frescoes, and peaceful setting. Some of the most popular routes include the climb to Magaro Peak at 2,255m (7,348 ft) for breathtaking vistas or the scenic paths through forested valleys. Galičica National Park sits between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa and is a hiker’s paradise, with trails offering stunning panoramic views of both lakes and beyond.

The art form’s ever-growing popularity inevitably bled into other mediums. Meals in restaurants start from €3 and a daily bus pass (taking you as far as Matka Canyon and back) only costs €1.50! From Skopje, catch a bus to Sofia taking 3 hours and costing less than €20. I really enjoyed my 2 days in Sofia and would highly recommend a visit!
Mavrovo National Park is perfect for skiing and mountain biking, while Galičica National Park provides excellent hiking trails with views of Lakes Ohrid and Prespa. Lake Ohrid is one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, known for its crystal-clear waters and historical significance. Strumica is also known for its thermal spas and Roman baths, particularly in the nearby village of Bansko. This festival, steeped in tradition, attracts thousands of visitors with its colourful parades, elaborate costumes, and lively atmosphere. One of the city’s most notable events is the Strumica Carnival, held during Orthodox Lent. It’s famous for its rich flora, with over 1,600 plant species, some of which are endemic.
Mavrovo National Park
So, if you’re keen to explore for yourself, here are some of the best things to do in Skopje, from statuesque sightseeing and pirate ship hotels to museums and markets spanning (what looks like, at least) centuries of history. There’s also fake old timey ships docked on the river, red double decker buses zooming around town, and statues. Kitschy, puzzling and shamelessly grand, the North Macedonian capital of Skopje (AKA Balkan Las Vegas) is a destination that truly divides people.
The water here – considered a small lake in itself, with two small islands in the middle – comes from the nearby Lake Prespa and is astoundingly clear. There’s a lot to do on and around Lake Ohrid, so take an unforgettable day or two to explore the area. During plagues, visitors to the town faced 40-day quarantines inside their walled confines. Ohrid town is North Macedonia’s most alluring destination and arguably one of the most beautiful spots in the whole of the Balkans. Skopje’s international airport is within easy reach of the city center by shuttle bus (not hugely frequent, 199MKD/US$3.45) or taxi (around 600MKD/US$10). Then head to the country’s top historic destination, Ohrid, to see its mysterious lake and stroll the town’s cobbled streets.

Day 4-5: Explore Ohrid

Despite its tourism growing at a rapid clip, North Macedonia is a relatively unknown and under-appreciated traveling destination. The bus between Skopje and Ohrid takes about three hours by the shortest route and costs about 500MKD one way. At present (2018), you cannot buy a bus ticket online; you can only buy it at the bus station. Within Skopje, the easiest is to get around by taxi but for a longer stay, you should get a bus card and a map of the bus lines.

But Tetovo is not just about historical sites; it’s also a centre of contemporary education and culture. Another significant site is the Arabati Baba Tekke, a well-preserved dervish monastery representing the Bektashi order, a testament to the city’s religious and cultural plurality. You’ll definitely enjoy North Macedonia as it offers plenty of diverse locations to discover. You can take a raft and enjoy the sight, book a lunch or perhaps a dinner at sunset. But even if you fail to catch the wedding, the road from Mavrovo to Galicnik is a separate spectacle to enjoy. The asphalt road is fairly forgiving even for a beginner, so make sure to enjoy the scenery around the lake. If the tide is low, you can even walk inside and explore the interior.
Kratovo
The historical Jewish community, of Sephardic origin, lived in the city until World War II, when some were able to immigrate to the United States and Chile. Bitola became one of the major cities of the Vardarska banovina. Throughout the 19th century, Bitola hosted the largest urban population of Aromanians in their native Balkans, with an estimated 10,000 to 18,000 Aromanians out of a total population of 40,000–50,000.
Bitola, known during the Ottoman Empire as Manastır or Monastir, is one of the oldest cities in North Macedonia. It is located in the southern part of the Pelagonia valley, surrounded by the Baba, Nidže, and Kajmakčalan mountain ranges, 14 kilometres (9 miles) north of the Medžitlija-Níki border crossing with Greece. The old city is located on the terraced riverbank dominated by an ancient fortress, north of which is a Roman aqueduct. Heraclea is a sight located on the outskirts of Bitola, a beautiful city worth exploring.
